The story takes place in a labor farm in Mississippi, where murderer Powles (played by Keith Carradine) escapes from prison with a group of outlaws he met while incarcerated. Fortune smiles upon them, and after a successful escape, Powles and his companions arrive at a relative's home, hoping to lay low. There, Powles meets a woman named Kaites (played by Shelley Duvall), whose gentle kindness captivates him. However, can the fugitive Powles really achieve his desire for love? After the escape, Powles and his brothers, unwilling to live quietly, commit a few small robberies, and their "harvest" is decent, which eases the caution of the men. Finally, during another robbery, the robbers face a " Waterloo." While evading relentless police pursuit, Powles seeks refuge with Kaites, hoping she can offer him shelter.
