Hélène (played by Delphine Seyrig) has recently lost her husband and become a widow. Soon after, she reunites with her first love, Alphonse (played by Jean-Pierre Kérien). The emotional pain and physical loneliness quickly bring Hélène and Alphonse together, as they believe they can find their former selves in each other. However, the psychological pressure and inescapable reality soon make it clear that the passion and joy can only offer them a temporary escape. Once the fervor fades, they must confront a much colder world. Bernard (played by Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée) encounters a girl named Murielle (played by Martine Vatel) by chance, not knowing that Murielle would ultimately die under the torment of the army. An enraged Bernard seeks to avenge Murielle.
