In an inconspicuous small town along the Fujian coast, the winds of illegal immigration persist despite repeated crackdowns. In pursuit of the American dream of wealth, locals have gone bankrupt and even lost their lives. The town's celebrity, Second Brother (played by Duan Long), was once part of the ranks of smugglers. He successfully set foot on American soil and had a son with the daughter of a fellow countryman who runs a restaurant there. However, this led to the shattering of his American dream when his angry father-in-law reported him to the immigration authorities, resulting in Second Brother's eventual deportation back to his home country.
After returning to his hometown, he finds himself bored and repressed, only feeling a brief sense of relief when a touring Yue opera troupe arrives, especially with the beautiful lead actress (played by Shu Yan). Soon after, Second Brother's son, Fusheng, returns to visit him. Persuaded by his elder brother, he finally gathers the courage to visit his son. However, his materialistic father-in-law forbids them from meeting on legal grounds. Yearning for his son, Second Brother is willing to take risks...
