On Christmas Eve, McClane (Bruce Willis) is waiting at Washington's airport for his wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) to return home for the holidays. However, he inadvertently discovers a major conspiracy: Colonel Stuart, who has been dismissed by Congress, is leading his troops to rescue the Central American drug lord General Esteban. McClane informs Captain McClane of the airport security, but the latter's bureaucratic style and stupidity prevent any action from being taken. Colonel Stuart and his men occupy a small church near the airport, set up a flight control center, and cut off all communication between the airport control tower and the air, leaving numerous commercial flights unable to land. Meanwhile, McClane's wife Holly is on one of those planes. In order to save his wife and the many planes in the air, McClane must once again make a hard effort.
