CIA agent Tom Bishop (played by Brad Pitt) fails a mission in a Far Eastern country and is subsequently arrested by the authorities, facing execution within 24 hours. Meanwhile, in the United States, Tom's partner, CIA agent Nathan D. Muir (played by Robert Redford), is lobbying CIA higher-ups to save Tom. Due to the international dispute involved, the CIA leadership leans towards sacrificing Tom for a peaceful resolution, while Nathan believes his partner's life is more important. Nathan argues fiercely with the higher-ups, and in prison, Tom reflects on the past, recalling a series of personal missions he carried out with Nathan, playing out like a rotating lantern before his eyes. A close-knit partnership, the journey of a CIA agent unfolds. Tom Bishop, an ordinary-looking CIA agent, becomes increasingly vivid. Will he be saved?
