"Drug King" is set in Busan, South Korea, in the 1970s, and tells the story of Lee Doo-sun, played by Song Kang-ho, who rises from a bottomless smuggler to a legendary drug lord. The character is based on a real-life drug lord who started with smuggling in the 1970s and eventually entered the drug manufacturing and trafficking industry. The director stated that although Lee Doo-sun is a fictional character, the script was completed after years of research using actual drug lords as prototypes.
