Weather reporter Susan (played by Nicole Kidman) becomes the center of media attention due to her husband’s murder case. Interviews with several parties gradually reveal the events… Susan, determined to pursue a career in journalism, disregards the opposition from her Italian-American husband Larry's (played by Matt Dillon) family and fully prepares for her entry into the field. She is eventually hired by a local cable station with only two staff members, taking on the role of “weather girl.” Susan’s high work enthusiasm is undeterred by the negative environment; she continually proposes work plans and embarks on a series of interviews with young people in schools, where she meets James (played by Joaquin Phoenix) and two other rebellious youths, who is deeply infatuated with her. When Susan realizes that her husband is becoming an obstacle to her career, she uses James to murder Larry. Susan considers herself the ultimate winner, but the situation suddenly takes a dark turn.
