In 1861, Johnnie Gray (played by Buster Keaton) is an employee of the Western Atlantic Railroad Company, deeply in love with his train "The General" and his fiancée (played by Marion Mack). When the Civil War breaks out, his fiancée urges him to enlist, but the army rejects him, believing his ability to operate the train is more valuable. His fiancée gets upset and vows not to speak to him again unless she sees him in uniform. The Union Army is planning a scheme to steal "The General" and launch a surprise attack on the Confederates. Johnnie discovers the Union's plot and unexpectedly rescues his fiancée from their camp. He must deliver the intelligence about the impending attack back to the Confederate lines, all while driving "The General" and facing relentless pursuit. The clash between the North and South is about to erupt...
