This film is adapted from the classic novel "Oliver Twist" by British author Charles Dickens, published in 1838. Oliver, an orphan (Barney Clark), is raised by the church and sent to a child labor factory at the age of nine, later sold as an apprentice to a coffin maker, where he suffers abuse. Oliver escapes from the coffin shop and walks seventy miles to London, where he meets the thief "the Artful Dodger" (Harry Eden) and is recruited into the thieving gang of the Jewish old man Fagin (Ben Kingsley). On his first outing, Oliver is wrongfully accused of stealing Mr. Brownlow’s (Edward Hardwicke) wallet and is knocked unconscious. He is taken in by the kind-hearted Mr. Brownlow, but on an errand for him, he is captured by Fagin's associate Bill (Jamie Foreman). Bill forces Oliver to assist him and his accomplice Toby (Mark Strong) in a nighttime burglary of Mr. Brownlow’s house. Young Oliver resists, but his life is in grave danger...
