"Breaking the Waves," by Danish director Lars von Trier, is his acclaimed work that gained international recognition and won the Jury Prize and the Technical Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The male protagonist is Kessler, a German-American youth who returns to his homeland after World War II, a place he has never been to. Originally a pacifist and idealist, he hopes to view the post-war European peoples with neutrality. However, his uncle arranges for Kessler to be a conductor on a train, giving him the opportunity to travel across Europe and hear various voices, ultimately uncovering the emptiness of peace slogans and humanitarianism. Additionally, the railway company's owner’s daughter, whom he falls in love with, is a supporter of Nazism, further complicating his situation. The director creates a dazzling magical realism, with bold cinematography that hypnotizes the audience, making it a work with a strong personal artistic style.
