In the 30th year of the Showa era, Hofu City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is a beautiful place surrounded by mountains and water, with fresh air. Akiyuki Shinoko (voiced by Mayuko Fukuda), a third-grade elementary school student, has grown up here and loves listening to her grandfather tell stories about this small town's ancient kingdom built a thousand years ago. One day, a transfer student from the metropolis joins Shinoko's class. This girl, Takihiko Shimazu (voiced by Nako Mizusawa), has fair skin and a good education, making her entirely different from the local children. Shinoko becomes friends with the somewhat reserved Takihiko and helps her integrate into this countryside life full of fantasy and magic...
This film is based on Nobuko Takagi's autobiographical novel "Mai Mai Shinoko (Akiyuki Shinoko)" and won the Best Animated Feature Award at the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2010.
