Due to mismanagement, the owner of the cottonwood inn, Kuzawa Shinbei (played by Shiga Noyaka Benkei), goes bankrupt, losing even his wife's dowry. Frustrated with the clamor of women, Kuzawa escapes to stay with the geisha Meiji (played by Uemura Yoko), whom he once supported. Out of goodwill, Meiji happily takes him in, but it attracts the discontent of Meiji's sister, "Little Toy" (played by Yamada Isuzu). Unlike Meiji, who grew up in Gion, "Little Toy," a graduate of a girls' school, is headstrong and self-assured; she does not believe in men's sweet nothings. To avoid falling into a life of hardship, she begins to plan to find a new patron for her sister...
