Tora-san is a wandering street vendor who drifts around all day. Upon hearing that his father has passed away and that only his sister Sakura is left at home, he rushes back. One day, Tora-san visits his uncle's house to attend a matchmaking banquet for his sister Sakura. Due to Tora-san's rude conversation and behavior, the impression he makes is very poor, and the engagement falls through. Reluctantly, Tora-san sets off on the road again. At a temple in Nara, Tora-san encounters the head priest of Daikokuten Temple and his daughter, Fuyuko. He is deeply attracted to Fuyuko's beauty, but as his sister falls in love with and marries a factory worker, Tora-san feels even lonelier in his own life. Summoning his courage, he tells Fuyuko that he likes her, but she informs him that she already has a boyfriend, and Tora-san has no choice but to leave and continue his long journey.
