The story takes place at the end of the Ming Dynasty. Yuan Chengzhi (played by Guo Zhui) is the loyal son of Yuan Chenghuan (played by Wei Tiancai). After the father and son are brutally killed, Yuan Chengzhi is led by a servant to flee to Mount Hua, where he becomes a disciple of the leader of the Huashan Sect, Mu Renqing (played by Li Shouqi). By chance, Yuan Chengzhi discovers the remains of the martial arts legend Jin She Langjun (played by Long Tianxiang) in a cave and also finds the long-lost Jin She secret manual, allowing him to master the Jin She swordsmanship. To fulfill Jin She Langjun's last wish, Yuan Chengzhi embarks on a journey to find a woman named Wen Yi (played by Jing Li) and meets Wen Qingqing (played by Wen Xue'er) along the way, thus getting caught up in a love-hate entanglement spanning several generations. What Yuan Chengzhi did not expect is that the gentle and lovely Wen Qingqing is, in fact, the daughter of Jin She Langjun.
