Hong Kong in the early 1970s. Wealthy young man Ling Hei (played by Jiang David) has no interest in his father's suggestion to study abroad and become a respectable person; what he values is being with his girlfriend Cindy (played by Chen Meiling) and tinkering with cars without a care in the world. After several futile attempts to persuade him, his father expresses understanding but warns him not to regret it in the future. Cindy has a more stubborn father who, despite her being a natural singer, strictly forbids her from singing, and finds it even harder to accept her being around a "rebellious" boy who is not yet 16. Something prompts Cindy to no longer tolerate her father, leading her to escape to Ling Hei's home, but Ling Hei's father has already made it clear that his home does not welcome underage girls. Rather than feeling frustrated, Ling Hei and Cindy find it liberating to rent a shabby room together, with one working as a nightclub singer and the other as a mechanic. Although life is tough, the hope for a beautiful future makes them love each other even more. However, they are naively overestimating everything.
