After the death of her mother, Bai Lan (played by Zhang Ziyi) travels across the sea to Incheon, South Korea, to seek refuge with an uncle she has never met, only to find out upon arrival that her uncle has immigrated to Canada. With her money exhausted, she reluctantly agrees to a sham marriage to obtain residency. Bai Lan has never met her "husband," Lee Jiangqi (played by Choi Min-sik), and only has a photo and a name. She works hard and overexerts herself, living in loneliness while enduring the judgmental looks around her. The only comfort she finds is in the photo of her "husband" in the room; she feels grateful to this stranger she has never met. However, the truth is that he is a middle-aged drifter with no job, who agreed to the sham marriage only out of financial desperation. Fate repeatedly causes them to miss the chance to meet each other until something happens...
