The story takes place in Tokyo in the 49th year of the Showa era, where 94-year-old painter Takumi Kumagai (played by Yasunori Yamazaki) lives. Takumi Kumagai and his wife, Hideko (played by Kirin Kiki), have a warm home, a porch, and a small garden, which allows their lives to be rich and fulfilling. Every day, Takumi can feel the changes of seasons and time through the vegetation in his backyard. He and his wife have understood the essence of life—that the elements that truly bring joy in life cannot be bought with money. Initially, it seemed that this pleasant life would never end, but one day, Takumi learns that a towering building is about to be constructed next to his home. The shadow of the building will cast over his garden, which means that the sun-loving plants growing there will face death.
