This film is a representative work of the Soviet documentary director Dziga Vertov, the founder of the "cinema eye" theory. The movie was primarily shot in Odessa, Ukraine, with the cinematographer being Vertov’s brother, Mikhail Kaufman. The film is divided into sections including audience seating, the city at dawn, the work and rest of the people, sports, and artistic practices, portraying an ideal city within the new Soviet society through various aspects of people’s lives. Cinematographer Mikhail Kaufman appears in the film as well, originating the cinematic form of "self-exposure." In this groundbreaking documentary, Vertov first employed avant-garde editing techniques such as double exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, jump cuts, and split screens, along with novel shooting techniques like low angles, close-ups, and push-pull shots, as well as creating a segment of stop-motion animation.
