The story takes place in the 17th century. Hester (Demi Moore) leaves her husband and settles alone in the British colony of Massachusetts Bay. The English settlers here are devout and strictly adhere to moral codes, making some of Hester's actions quite conspicuous in this oppressive colonial environment. The local minister Arthur (Gary Oldman) is handsome and passionate, and Hester is deeply attracted to his charisma; the two like-minded individuals quickly fall into a dangerous romance. Soon, news arrives that Hester's doctor husband has been killed by Indians, and the lovers, who thought they could reveal their relationship, instead face exposure. Hester, to protect Arthur, refuses to confess to adultery, and is consequently imprisoned until she gives birth to a baby girl, while Arthur endures daily psychological torment outside the prison... After her release, Hester wears the symbol of shame for adulterers, and her supposedly dead husband suddenly reappears, vowing to expose the adulterer to vent his rage...
