"Old Ding's Spring" is a film rich in artistic flavor. Wang Lin, who is both the producer and screenwriter of the film, told reporters that the film is based on a true story. The protagonist's surname is Ding, he is from Beijing, and he takes care of his ex-wife, ex-mother-in-law, and ex-father-in-law, all living together in one room. He is merely a newspaper stand vendor, a commoner, and if we don't use terms like traditional virtues of the Chinese nation to describe him, he can be considered a "real man." Wang Lin expressed that she was deeply moved after hearing this story. "Old Ding hasn't made great contributions to society, but he is a hero in the family, a model of moral life for the common people. He can diffuse all conflicts invisibly and withstand distrust and pressure from all sides. He is like a rogue in the streets, and I admire him while writing his biography." Wang Lin said that while creating the script, she believed that she only needed to focus on two points: how to interpret Old Ding's character and which angle to use to tell his story. "For someone like Old Ding, interpretation is crucial because there are too many selfish people who misunderstand, despise, ridicule, or even blindly reject Old Ding's actions. The problem is that the screenwriter must fully understand what the protagonist does in order to convey that understanding through dramatic means. From characters as small as Old Ding to larger-than-life figures like Lei Feng, the creation of such real characters faces the same problem. No matter how absurd a story is, people believe it when it's written in the news, but when it appears in a script, it falls short. This shows that literary and artistic works require emotional authenticity above objective reality." Regarding her protagonist Old Ding, Wang Lin has a fresh interpretation: "Old Ding has a 'real man' side; he believes that if a woman climbs the social ladder, it shows his own inadequacy, and dragging a woman down is a man's disgrace. If she wants to leave, let her go; with children, everything can be set aside. He isn't afraid of being unsupported when he’s old. So, Old Ding left her. Lin Qiao's parents are essentially similar to Old Ding; they feel particularly guilty and treat Old Ding well, as if he has found moral support. When Lin Qiao's parents fell ill, Old Ding treated them as his own parents in their final moments, even taking on the impossible task of caring for the sick Lin Qiao until her death." During the interview, Wang Lin repeatedly expressed her hope that her work could bring happiness to people. "For me, Old Ding's sense of responsibility and his compassion always touch me. The hand that Lin Qiao extends tightly grips what she loves, not her life. Jin Ling's yearning for love and her selfless devotion deeply move me. In a dramatic world, they create their own universe, warming up other audiences; that’s the only goal I want to achieve." In recent years, films like "True Color," "Fortune Lies Ahead," "Police Badge · Alert," and "Loud Singing," produced by Dalian Hengguang Media, have all been shot in Dalian. This time, "Old Ding's Spring" is being filmed in Dalian again, further confirming Wang Lin's hometown feelings. "Many international big cities' tourist bureaus have specially set up mechanisms to attract film crews; Korean film and television works have greatly boosted local tourism. Every citizen in Dalian must hope to see Dalian on film and television; it not only feels familiar but also fills one with pride," Wang Lin stated. Director Qiao Liang: "The Great Love Shining Through Mundane Life" Upon meeting the impressive young director Qiao Liang, one might initially mistake him for a lead actor in the film. From a family of directors, Qiao Liang holds a bachelor's degree in Chinese, a master's in directing, and a doctorate in film studies, and he is currently an associate professor in the directing department at the Beijing Film Academy. His digital film "My Own Germany" was nominated at the 2007 Tokyo International Digital Film Festival, and his digital film "Zhen Zhen" won the Excellent Digital Film Award at the 10th University Student Film Festival, earning Qiao Liang the Best Director Award. He has also directed several well-received TV dramas, including "Mr. Fashion" and "Love and Separation." When directing "Old Ding's Spring," Qiao Liang said he was first touched by the script. "Now, many media are competing to unearth 'moving China' stories. After watching and hearing so many, I seem to have developed some 'immunity,' yet 'Old Ding's Spring' still moved me. Many stories are inherently moving; it’s the person telling the story who tries to make the protagonist appear grand and perfect by consciously or unconsciously avoiding certain events and details. In order to highlight their desired themes, they make the protagonist thin and even wooden, sometimes becoming a mouthpiece for certain concepts. However, 'Old Ding's Spring' brings forth surprise after the emotion. The script unfolds gradually, revealing complex contradictions in calmness. The character relationships, which are loose externally but tight internally, are very captivating, especially the ending which leaves one with lingering emotions." Qiao Liang stated, "'Old Ding's Spring' made me aware for the first time that there is a disease called ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in the world. The patient's internal thoughts and emotions are normal; only their bodily functions seem to gradually freeze until they suffocate to death. Currently, there are one hundred thousand such patients in China! The fact that life can end in such a cruel way shocked me. Such a disease undoubtedly represents a brutal torment and test for both the patients and their loved ones. In the script, Lin Qiao, who falls ill, even lacks family support; her abandoned ex-husband Old Ding and his current wife Jin Ling reach out their hands to her. The story unfolds in such an extreme state, ultimately revealing love conquering death and fear, shining brightly with great love amid mundane life." Qiao Liang expressed, "We hope this film can move more people after its release, encouraging them to strengthen their beliefs: loving others is loving oneself, helping others is helping oneself, and saving others is saving oneself. We will do our utmost to make this film well; we have confidence and strength."
