In the world where fifteen-year-old Igo grows up, evil is not a major concern, and under-the-table dealings are the norm. One day, a West African illegal worker hired by his father falls from a building and is left critically injured; to avoid legal trouble, his father lets him bleed to death and tries to conceal the truth. Before dying, the worker makes Igo promise to take care of his orphaned widow. From this moment, Igo's carefree world collapses, and his pure loyalty to his father fades, replaced by guilt and a sense of justice that feels both sunny and bleak. The Dardenne brothers frame the story around current European issues: waves of immigration, multicultural coexistence, and illegal labor, presenting a simple moral awakening. Through strong textures, details, and smooth hand-held cinematography, the film leads the audience into the world of marginalized people at the Belgian border, revitalizing the brilliance of realism.
