Lee Jin-tae (played by Jang Dong-gun) is a shoemaker living in Seoul, and his family's livelihood relies on the income from mending shoes. Though materially not wealthy, it is a warm and complete family. His wife Lee Eun-soon (played by Lee Eun-ju) and mother run a noodle shop, and they also take care of the younger siblings. His brother Lee Jin-suk (played by Won Bin) is the hope of the family, currently in high school, dreaming of getting into college, which also serves as a hope for his brother Jin-tae. However, with the sudden outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, their peaceful life is quickly disrupted. As the war spreads to Seoul, Jin-tae decides to take his family to Daegu to escape the turmoil. But on the way, they are forcibly conscripted into the army and loaded onto a train to the front lines at the Nakdong River. From then on, the family is torn apart. On the battlefield, Jin-tae is left with a single wish: to do whatever it takes to protect his brother with his life, and when he hears that obtaining a national medal can exempt his brother from service, he charges madly to the front lines of battle. However, the cruel battlefield combined with a capricious fate leads to an inevitable change in their life trajectories.
