At the end of World War II, German soldier Koligewins (Michael Mendl) becomes a prisoner of war and is sentenced to 25 years in prison. Meanwhile, his pregnant wife and daughter have no news of him and can only pray for his safe return. After a long journey, a group of prisoners is taken to a labor camp where there are no walls or fences, but the extreme cold and the vast ice plains become insurmountable barriers. Located in eastern Siberia, many die due to the weather and diseases upon arrival, but the inhumane life of miners is the real hell. Koligewins never forgets his distant family, and a failed escape leads to his brutal treatment by the guards, yet it only strengthens his resolve to escape. With the help of an elderly doctor, Koligewins eventually escapes from the labor camp, gaining hope of returning home. However, before him lies a 14,000-kilometer "land of death," and on the snow-covered ice plains, Koligewins begins his long journey home alone… This film has won multiple international awards, and its plot is based on a true escape story.
