The protagonist, David Dunn (played by Bruce Willis), has gained superpowers and has become a vigilante. With the help of his son Joseph, David starts to track down Kevin Wendell Crumb (played by James McAvoy), who has 24 distinct personalities, among which the "Beast" is the most powerful due to its evolved fighting abilities. After saving a college student kidnapped by Kevin, both David and his son are controlled by Dr. Staple. Also captured at Dr. Staple's research facility is Mr. Glass—Elijah (played by Samuel L. Jackson). Mr. Glass was once the mastermind of a criminal gang, and his body is extremely fragile; even a light touch can cause a fracture. Mr. Glass discovers David's superpowers and believes that the stories in superhero comics are real. He goes to great lengths, even resorting to unscrupulous means, to prove the existence of the superheroes he firmly believes in. At the facility, the doctors attempt to brainwash these three men, all of whom suffer from extreme delusions; their incredible abilities can be explained by science and coincidence. With the help of the doctor's mother and a former victim kidnapped by Kevin, Joseph uncovers that the doctor's true identity is not simple. Meanwhile, Mr. Glass, Elijah, meticulously orchestrates a scheme, inciting Kevin and David to publicly fight so that it can be recorded as evidence, thereby achieving his goal of proving to the world that superheroes do exist.
