Jeff (played by Kurt Russell) and Amy (played by Kathleen Quinlan) are a married couple. During a long road trip, their vehicle breaks down in the wilderness. Just when they are in a panic, a stranger named Red (played by J.T. Walsh) appears before them. Red kindly tells Jeff and Amy that there is a place nearby where they can call for a tow truck. Jeff decides to let Amy follow Red to that place, and soon, this wrong decision leads Jeff to pay the price. While waiting for the tow truck, Jeff manages to fix the car himself, so he decides to drive to the location Red mentioned to find Red and Amy. Unexpectedly, when Jeff arrives, no one in the area claims to have seen Amy. Jeff confronts Red, who surprisingly claims not to know Jeff, let alone any Amy. Suspicious, Jeff senses that something is amiss, but without any evidence, he cannot ask the police for help, leaving him in a state of despair.
