When it comes to Finland's relatively small film industry, people only think of the Kaurismäki brothers, and truly, thrillers and horror films are quite rare. "Lake Bodom," which topped the Finnish box office last weekend, is such a film. Originally titled "Water Body," director Joonas Tertti stated that the film embodies the urban fear of vast bodies of water and the quiet countryside life. The female protagonist is a lawyer who returns to her childhood home to protect the lake area from developers, but a series of supernatural events ensue. Needless to say, it will quickly remind you of Jennifer Connelly’s "Dark Water." Critics have mentioned that its plot is quite clichéd, but the technical aspects, such as visual effects and editing, are commendable. The following trailer makes it clear why audiences are drawn to it.
