Jack (played by George Clooney) is a notorious and unlucky thief. After a failed heist, he faces a thirty-year prison sentence. Unwilling to accept his fate, Jack vows not to succumb and decides to escape from prison. Police detective Karen (played by Jennifer Lopez), born into a family of law enforcement, unfortunately has poor judgment and often falls for bad men. By chance, she encounters Jack and his partner Buddy (played by Ving Rhames) during their escape, becoming their hostage. During their flight, Karen and Jack develop feelings for each other, and after being forced apart, capturing her lover becomes Karen's only ideal.
