At the brink of death, Emperor Tang Xuanzong (Liu Changchun) deeply misses the beloved concubine and hopes to find the Painting Saint, Wu Daizi (Wu Ma), to paint a portrait of her to ease his longing. Young painter Tang Anzhou (Xu Ning) embarks on a journey to find Wu Daizi, eventually arriving at Qingyang Town, where he encounters a disheveled and mad old beggar at an inn. Various signs indicate that the old beggar is actually concealing his identity, and his true identity should be the reclusive Wu Daizi. To lure him out, Tang Anzhou sets up numerous schemes but is continually outsmarted by the astute old beggar and the innkeeper, Hongjiang (Guo Zhenni). Ultimately, Tang Anzhou gains leverage over Hongjiang by uncovering her past, and reluctantly, the old beggar leads Tang Anzhou to a grave, revealing that the person buried there is indeed Wu Daizi.
