Directed by Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia, the biographical film "The God of Football: Messi" fully recounts the childhood and rise to fame of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi. It is a semi-documentary, semi-dramatic film that features interviews with Messi's friends, teammates, coaches, and football stars, and is filmed in three locations: Rosario, Buenos Aires, and Barcelona. "We know he is a genius on the field, but we also want to know what kind of person he is off the field." Messi's childhood is "recreated" using a dramatized format, with the script written by former Argentine national team player Jorge Valdano. To ensure authenticity, a 9-year-old boy named Juan Ignacio Martinez, who resembles Messi, was cast to portray Messi's childhood struggle with growth hormone deficiency that threatened his life. The film takes the audience on a journey to explore whether he was a born star or made through effort, and how he ultimately became a football legend leading the Argentine team to compete for the World Cup title in 2014.
