This is the final installment of the Qatsi documentary trilogy. Qatsi means "life" in the Hopi language, which is indigenous to the American Indians. Due to funding issues, this film was not released until 2002, taking a decade to produce, but it did not receive the same acclaim as the previous two works, Powaqqatsi (1988) and Koyaanisqatsi (1983). The music is once again composed by Philip Glass, with Yo-Yo Ma performing the cello solo in this film. Renowned film critic ROGER EBERT said: “I have problems with 'Naqoyqatsi' as a film, but as a music video it's rather remarkable.” In 1983, commissioned by the IRS (Institute of Regional Study), director Godfrey Reggio created a non-narrative television piece, which laid the groundwork for the groundbreaking first installment of the Qatsi series, Koyaanisqatsi. With strong support and promotion from figures like Lucas and Coppola, Koyaanisqatsi created a sensational impact at the time. Five years later, the second installment of the Qatsi series, Powaqqatsi, was born. Although it did not achieve major breakthroughs over the first film, it remained an excellent work. The journey of creating Naqoyqatsi was fraught with difficulties. Despite Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi receiving fairly good reviews, the director faced serious funding problems during filming. In this situation, even though Paramount had released DVDs for the first two films, Reggio insisted on reclaiming the rights, allowing fans interested in purchasing DVDs to contact him directly for a price of 150 dollars, as support for the filming costs of the third film. Finally, with the support of Miramax, renowned director Steven Soderbergh (director of "Sex, Lies, and Videotape", "Traffic", "Contagion") was appointed as the executive producer, and after more than a decade, this work was finally completed. The film is filled with seemingly random footage: a soaring atomic bomb, a color-changing Dolly sheep emitting strange glances, and world maps, stock markets, numbers, and parades of people... then comes the police, waving sticks, long knives, and the whistling of bullets flying by... As the camera shifts, we see boxers attacking and falling, Bin Laden and his beard, as well as distorted computers and meaningless arguments. What follows? Flowing noise and silent parades, slow-moving cars, Bush, roulette, roller coasters, fast food, speed, the internet... In the end, what remains is death, explosions, and the graceful environment where keyboards and letters flutter. Cars arrive, lights brighten, headlights shine, and someone is crying...
