This film documents the lives of shakuhachi players, makers, and learners in China, Japan, and the United States, witnessing the journeys of those walking the path of the shakuhachi. Through their different stages of experience and reflection, it mirrors the ancient shakuhachi's current challenges and hopes, while also reflecting each person's understanding and insights about life, existence, and the world through the shakuhachi. Shakuhachi, a tubular musical instrument made from the root of bamboo, is named after its length of one shaku and eight suns. Originating in China, it was brought to Japan during the Southern Song period and has since evolved into a representative traditional instrument of Japan; meanwhile, in China, the shakuhachi has gradually declined. At the end of the 20th century, with the increase in cultural exchanges between China and Japan, the shakuhachi has re-entered the consciousness of the Chinese people.
