The film is adapted from the 1999 novel of the same name by American author Laura Kasischke. Set in the 1980s, it revolves around a middle-class suburban family in America. When Kate, played by Shailene Woodley, is 17 years old, her beautiful and mysterious mother (played by Eva Green), who is the perfect housewife, suddenly disappears. For Kate, who has grown up in a repressive family environment, her mother's disappearance is almost a sense of relief and comfort. However, as time goes by, she gradually realizes the impact this event has on her. During a college break at home, she unexpectedly discovers the truth behind her mother's departure and realizes that various clues were right in front of her at the time, yet she never noticed them.
