The divine doctor Hua Tuo treated him with just one acupuncture needle, curing his ailment. Cao Cao wanted to keep Hua Tuo in the army to treat him, but Hua Tuo wished to use his medical skills to benefit the suffering common people and developed an anesthetic before declining the offer. Later, Cao Cao issued a commission that forced Hua Tuo to serve in the army. Hua Tuo accidentally discovered that Cao Cao's fourth son, Cao Chong, had a fatal hidden illness, and wrote a prescription for Cao Pi. However, Cao Pi, in his quest for power, burned the prescription. Hua Tuo received a letter from his wife, Yunqing, about the discovery of the anesthetic, and took leave to return home overnight. When Hua Tuo was searching for the anesthetic, his beloved son, Fei Er, accidentally ingested poisonous wild fruit and died. Hua Tuo and his wife were heartbroken and named the anesthetic they developed "Mafeisan." Cao Cao sent people to forcibly bring Hua Tuo back to the military camp, and he was imprisoned for arriving late.
