In the late Qing Dynasty, a time of political corruption and people's suffering, Song Charlie (Jiang Wen) combines his advanced knowledge gained in the United States with Sun Yat-sen (Zhao Wenxuan) in an attempt to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. Subsequently, Song Charlie's three daughters, each with their unique charm from studying abroad in America, return to China: the eldest, Song Ailing (Michelle Yeoh), marries the businessman Kong Xiangxi (Niu Zhenhua), the second, Song Qingling (Maggie Cheung), defies her father's wishes to follow the revolutionary Sun Yat-sen, and the youngest, Song Meiling (Wu Junmei), becomes the wife of the fervent pursuer Chiang Kai-shek (Wu Xingguo), who was once a revolutionary and later a traitor. The fates of the three women begin to fluctuate alongside the destinies of three of the most important men in China's turbulent politics at that time.
