In order to cut through all the conflicting scientific perspectives and to prepare for soon becoming a father, Damon Gameau sets out to uncover the true impact of sugar on human health. Damon Gameau is an Australian actor and director who has been on a no-sugar diet for several years and conducts a personal experiment on sugar. At one point, for 60 days, Damon Gameau consumed 40 teaspoons of sugar daily, which is the average sugar intake for a normal person. The sugar naturally found in food is often considered healthy. Therefore, desserts, chocolate, ice cream, and soda are seen as unhealthy, while juice, granola, yogurt, and many “light” products are deemed harmless. As the experiment progressed, Damon Gameau, along with actors, animators, and special effects artists, examined those “junk” foods and discussed the experiment with a panel of medical experts, yielding a significant interim result. For example, Stephen Fry delivered a fascinating presentation on the differences between glucose, sucrose, and fructose, while Gameau (or his “nano version”) showcased a marvelous journey pinpointing where sugar resides in his brain. In addition to the experiment content, the film includes a wealth of lighthearted interviews, including one with a sugar addict from an Indigenous community and an interview with a scientist sponsored by Coca-Cola.
