In the early 1990s, Cuban pilot René González (played by Edgar Ramirez) defects to the United States and begins a new life of freedom, leaving his wife (played by Penélope Cruz) and young daughter behind in the communist homeland. But René is not just a simple American success story. He joins the "Wasp Network" in South Florida, an organization made up of Cuban exiles led by secret agent Manuel Viramontes (a.k.a. Gerardo Hernandez, played by Gael García Bernal). He becomes part of a pro-Castro espionage circle responsible for monitoring and infiltrating Cuban-American terrorist organizations attempting to attack the socialist republic of Cuba.
The Wasp Network is based on the true story of the "Cuban Five" (including González, intelligence agents arrested in Florida in September 1998 and later convicted for espionage and other illegal activities). This gripping and stylistically unique political thriller carries multiple meanings and brings together a group of Cuban nationals and Cuban-American exiles caught in a complex and subtle ideological struggle fraught with questions of loyalty and betrayal.
The film is adapted from the book "The Last Soldiers of the Cold War" by Fernando Morais, with writer and director Olivier Assayas (known for "Carlos" and "Personal Shopper") leading a strong cast including Penélope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Gael García Bernal, Ana de Armas, Leonardo Sbaraglia, and Wagner Moura, engaging in an explosive urgent espionage game across the "mirror hall" of these two neighboring countries, where decades-long confrontations have deep implications for the present.
