In 1939, as the Spanish Civil War comes to a close after three years, right-wing fascists are gaining ground. Leftist war orphan Carlos (Fernando Tielve) is sent by his father's comrades to an orphanage located in the remote countryside. This orphanage is run jointly by the stern Miss Carmen (Marisa Paredes) and the kind Professor Casares (Federico Luppi). Carlos quickly overcomes his feelings of loss from leaving his family and uncles, as he integrates into this large family filled with peers. However, the central courtyard, marked by a bombshell, may harbor some strange anomalies. The bed number 12 that Carlos sleeps in previously belonged to a boy named Santi, who mysteriously died not long ago. Ever since Carlos arrived, the ghost of that little boy has been appearing... This film won the Silver Award from the Jury at the 2002 Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival; the International Critics' Award, Jury Special Award, and the Youth Jury Prize at the 2002 Gérardmer Film Festival in France; and the Best Actor Award at the 2002 Youth Artist Awards (Fernando Tielve).
