In 1958, New York, Diane Arbus (played by Nicole Kidman) is an ordinary woman who knows nothing but being a good wife and mother. Born into a wealthy Jewish merchant family, her parents run the famous Russek fur store. Growing up in privilege, Diane marries the socially awkward Allan Arbus (played by Ty Burrell) and tries to support his work in fashion photography. The harsh criticisms from her parents and the monotony of married life leave Diane feeling oppressed and lonely. One day, a new neighbor, Lionel (played by Robert Downey Jr.), moves in, and she is captivated by his mystery, beginning to consciously notice and explore everything about him. Unbeknownst to her, her life begins to change quietly... This film is adapted from Patricia Bosworth's bestselling biography of Diane Arbus published in 1984.
