Maddie (Kristen Bell) and her boyfriend Josh have recently grown distant. After several failed attempts to reach him by phone, she visits Josh, only to find his corpse after he has committed suicide... Maddie is filled with guilt, haunted by visions of her boyfriend. Soon, while using an online chat application with friends, an instant message from Josh suddenly appears. Maddie suspects that someone is using her boyfriend's computer, and asks her friend to check it out, leading to a terrifying experience at Josh's house... Meanwhile, as Maddie searches for the whereabouts of the computer, she meets a young man named Dexter, who discovers a series of strange videos on Josh's computer. In these videos, Josh recounts using hacking skills to unleash terrifying entities that he can no longer control. As suicides and erratic behaviors erupt around her, Maddie increasingly realizes that a cloud of terror spread through the internet is quickly engulfing the entire city...
