Bob (played by Christian Slater) is a typically overlooked company employee, living alone on a meager salary. He despises everyone at the office but has a special fondness for his beautiful colleague Vanessa (played by Elisha Cuthbert). Every day he fantasizes about how to gun down his indifferent coworkers and boss, but one morning, another colleague beats him to it. Unfortunately, Vanessa is accidentally injured in the process. In an effort to save her, Bob steps up, but she ends up unable to walk again. Overnight, Bob becomes the hero who saves the company, gaining a promotion, but his true desire is to rescue the lonely Vanessa. However, things aren't as they seem; while Bob's life improves, he harbors many hidden insecurities, and Vanessa, appearing pure on the surface, has her own troubled past.
