Plot: This is a bizarre story about a painter named John and his wife Alma, who live on a desolate island. The painter is often troubled by grotesque dreams, and upon awakening, he sketches these dreams in his notebook. One day, Alma encounters a whimsical old woman who urges her to read John's diary. After reading it, she discovers her husband's secret. Later, the castle's owner, Meckan, invites them over, and in the castle, Alma recognizes that these people had previously appeared in her husband's sketches. On the way home, Alma begs her husband to stay away from these individuals, but the painter remains silent and walks away. Back home, the painter confesses to Alma that he once killed a child at the edge of a cliff. The next day, mysterious visitors from the castle return to John's home and tempt him to come back to the castle, where he witnesses a demonic ritual and becomes trapped in a spiraling abyss. Meanwhile, outside the castle, Alma futilely searches for John, but she only finds his belongings and loses him forever. Behind the Production: The film combines elements of horror and surrealism, exploring the intrinsic connection between artistic creation and madness, and is Bergman's only horror film. The two lead actors deliver remarkable performances that portray the anguish of psychological distortion, making a profound impact.
