Beautiful reporter Casey falls in love with internationally renowned chess player Peter (played by Christopher Lambert) during an interview, but after a night of passion, she suddenly passes away. The police enlist psychologist Jaffee (played by Diane Lane) to investigate the case, hoping her expertise will provide a fresh perspective on this perplexing mystery. The police narrow the suspects down to Peter, and Jaffee, using an alias, attempts to get close to him, but he sees through her disguise. Soon after, another murder occurs, and the killer leaves clues at the crime scene, challenging Jaffee. Realizing Peter is innocent, Jaffee decides to help him clear his name, and in the process, sparks of romance ignite between them.
