On August 8, 1945, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan, and a million Soviet Red Army soldiers entered Northeast China. On August 9, Mao Zedong issued a statement titled "The Final Battle Against the Japanese Invaders," calling on all anti-Japanese forces in China to launch a nationwide counteroffensive. Subsequently, Commander-in-Chief Zhu De issued a series of orders for the counteroffensive, demanding that our troops stationed at the Hebei and Liaoning border, the Jiretliao Military District, immediately split into three groups to advance toward Liaoning and Jilin, coordinating with the Soviet Red Army to completely drive the Japanese forces out of the three northeastern provinces. The 16th Division of the Jiretliao Military District was a heroic unit that had long persisted in anti-Japanese activities in Eastern Hebei, being closest to Northeast China. Under the leadership of Commander Zeng Kelin, they quickly broke through. Overcoming numerous difficulties along the way, they fought in cooperation with the Soviet Red Army, first capturing Shanhaiguan, which cleared the way for the following troops to enter Northeast China. After that, they traveled in a "mixed train" consisting of 40 cars including boxcars, flatcars, and passenger cars, advancing directly to Jinzhou and garrisoning in Shenyang. Due to the Sino-Soviet Treaty signed between the Soviet government and the Kuomintang government, the stationed Soviet Army insisted on handing over major cities like Shenyang to the Kuomintang, refusing to allow Zeng Kelin's troops to enter Shenyang. Zeng Kelin, who was both straightforward and meticulous, argued his case with determination and finally established a foothold in Shenyang. In order to maintain local social security and quickly restore production, Zeng Kelin's troops were reorganized as the Northeast People's Autonomous Army and established a garrison area in Shenyang equal to that of the Soviet Army, with Zeng Kelin as commander. While battling against the puppet Manchukuo forces, the Kuomintang underground organizations, and bandits, Zeng Kelin, with sharp strategic insight, vigorously developed revolutionary armed forces, rapidly growing from thousands of members at breakthrough to tens of thousands, stationed across Liaoning and Jilin. Due to the needs of the situation, Zeng Kelin then took a Soviet military plane to Yan'an, where he reported comprehensively to the Central Committee about the favorable situation in Northeast China. Based on this, the Central Committee made a significant strategic decision—to develop northward and defend southward. Although our troops later temporarily withdrew from major cities such as Shenyang, they firmly implemented Chairman Mao's policy of "give way on the main road, occupy the sides," laying a solid foundation for ultimately achieving victory in the Liaoshen Campaign. History has shown that Zeng Kelin's breakthrough and trip to Yan'an played an immeasurable and important role in establishing a solid revolutionary base in Northeast China and shortening the process of victory for the Chinese revolution.
