In a certain water town in Jiangnan in 1948, the able-bodied men have been conscripted into the army, leaving behind only disabled men and the elderly and children. The strange death of coachman Ding Dashan in a ruined temple shatters the tranquility of the town. Based on the remaining six-and-a-half-inch shoe prints and an embroidered shoe, suspicion falls on Su Er (played by Lin Xinru), who is famous for her embroidery. The case is deemed a murder related to adultery, and the traditionally conservative gentry leads the villagers to brutally punish Su Er with the extreme sentence of "water torture," leaving her two underage children in despair. However, from then on, a series of murders occur in the town. First, the wife of the pig-cage maker Cheng Nan (played by Jing Gangshan) is killed by bamboo strips piercing her heart, followed by the bizarre death of a gentry, and even sightings of Su Er appearing mysteriously in the water town at night. What is the truth behind it all...?
