Connery plays Sergeant Johnson, a veteran police officer with 20 years of experience, who is responsible for investigating three recent cases of child molestation in the town. Soon, a little girl goes missing, and the police team conducts a thorough search, during which Johnson finds the girl in the woods. That night, two patrol officers discover a disheveled man named Baxter, covered in mud, who is suspected to be the molester and is detained. After rushing back to the police station, Johnson, driven by instinct, concludes that Baxter is guilty and brutally beats him to death. Later, under interrogation by Chief Inspector Carter White, the thoughts hidden in Johnson's mind begin to emerge.
