The story takes place in England in 1884, where Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) is preparing to celebrate her 16th birthday, only to find that on this day, her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has gone missing. The famed detective Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) become Enola's guardians. Facing her eccentric and uncontrollable sister, the two men are determined to send her to a boarding school that specializes in training "ladies," but Enola is not the type to be easily manipulated. In a disagreement, she chooses to run away from home and heads to London in search of her mother. Along the way, Enola becomes embroiled in a very mysterious case, transforming into a detective and engaging in a battle of wits with her brother.
