This controversial and bizarre film revolves around a group of circus freaks. The dwarf Hans (played by Harry Earles) harbors a secret crush on the "normal" woman, the beautiful trapeze artist Cleopatra (played by Olga Baclanova). Frida (played by Daisy Earles), also a little person, warns Hans that she is only after his money. Cleopatra is involved with the strongman Hercules (played by Henry Victor) and devises a scheme to marry Hans for his wealth. During the wedding, Cleopatra shouts that everyone present is a "FREAK" and enrages all the freaks. On a rainy night, the freaks seek revenge on the two "normals"… After its release in 1932, the film was banned for its grotesque subject matter and became a financial failure. However, viewed today, it stands out as a rare "normal" film. The director poses a stark question: Who, exactly, is the "normal" one?
