In ancient town folklore, there are three major taboos in painting, known as the "three no-painting rules": do not paint at midnight, do not paint eyes, do not paint ghosts. Painting at midnight may invite evil spirits; painting eyes could ensnare a person's soul; painting ghosts will cause that ghost to cling to you. The painter Lu Feng arrives in town, skeptical of this legend, and moves into an ancient house with his wife, Ouyang Xue. He works in his studio late into the night, and soon after, his wife mysteriously disappears, and odd occurrences start happening in the studio...
