In the 4th century AD, as the Roman Empire began to decline, the pagan philosopher Hypatia (played by Rachel Weisz) taught her students in Alexandria. Orestes (played by Oscar Isaac) often professed his love for her, even boldly declaring it in the theater; meanwhile, the slave Davus (played by Max Minghella) also had feelings for her but felt unable to voice them due to his lowly status. At the same time, the freedom preached by Christians began to shake Davus's beliefs, leading to his punishment by flogging, from which Hypatia tended to him, soothing his spirit. Amidst the turmoil, riots incited by pagans broke out, giving Christians the upper hand, leading to a standoff between the two factions at the Library of Alexandria. Later, they received a command from the Roman rulers to expel pagans from the library and allow Christians to enter, which initiated a brutal catastrophe...This film was part of the non-competitive screening at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, filmed in Malta's Fort Ricasoli, which was also the filming location for "Gladiator" and "Troy." Hypatia was originally set to be played by Nicole Kidman, but she was replaced due to backlash from Christians over her role as a villain in "The Golden Compass."
