One year, with the Turkish army pressing in, in a besieged British town, the Henry Theater Company is staging the story of the infamous liar Baron Munchausen. Unexpectedly, during the performance, Munchausen (played by John Neville) himself appears, claiming that the war is entirely a result of a bet he made with the Turkish Sultan. With the help of four skilled servants, Munchausen sweeps through the Turkish royal treasury, provoking the Sultan to declare war. Before his words are fully out, Turkish cannon fire destroys the theater. Munchausen rallies the townspeople to create hot air balloons from dresses and, accompanied by the theater owner's daughter Sally (played by Sarah Polley), sets off on an adventure to find his four servants. The duo reaches the moon, rescues a swift-footed man from the Moon King, and, with the support of Venus (Uma Thurman), pulls a strongman away. Ultimately, they reunite with a gunslinger and a keen-eared companion inside the belly of a giant fish. The five arrive on the battlefield, and with Munchausen leading the way, the servants regain their lost powers and triumph over the Turks... With Munchausen's tale concluded, the audience in the theater follows him out of the city, discovering that victory has truly arrived like a miracle.
